Azerbaijan`s President attends Victory Day ceremony in Baku (UPDATE) (PHOTO)

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has today attended a solemn ceremony in Baku to mark the 66th anniversary of the victory over fascism in the World War II.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has today attended a solemn ceremony to mark the 66th anniversary of the victory over fascism in the World War II, Azerbaijani President's official website reported.

A guard of honor was lined up here.

The President was warmly welcomed by war veterans and residents of the capital Baku in front of the monument to Major-General Hazi Aslanov, twice Hero of the Soviet Union.

The President greeted the veterans and congratulated them on the Victory Day. He was curious about their problems and needs.

The veterans said they would never forget national leader Heydar Aliyev`s attention and care for them. They also thanked President Ilham Aliyev and said they would always support him.
The Head of State posed for photographs together with the veterans.

Then, the Azerbaijani President laid a wreath at the monument.

To the accompaniment of the military march, he inspected the guard of honor.

Azerbaijan played a great role in the USSR`s victory over fascism sending 600,000 to the war, with about half of them died in battles. Over 130 citizens of Azerbaijan were given a title of Hero of the Soviet Union, and over 170,000 were awarded various orders and medals.

Among the participants of the event were Speaker of Milli Majlis Ogtay Asadov, Chief of the Presidential Administration Ramiz Mehdiyev and other officials.
