Prime Minister of Georgia Bidzina Ivanishvili was unanimously elected the honorary chairman of the Georgian Dream party by the congress of the party. According to Ivanishvili, he would have become the chairman of the party, if not the deficiencies of present constitution.
"The constitution gives me, the citizen of France, the right to become the prime minister, but doesn't give the Georgian citizenship, therefore, today I only got elected the honorary chairman of the party I have founded," he said in his speech.
Ivanishvili has called for the establishment of the rule of law in the country, but stressed that he would not tolerate revanchism. He also promised that all those responsible for violence against people will answer before the law.
"Recently, attacks and clashes have taken place between the two groups, as well as politicians, and this is unacceptable. Although I understand the righteous anger of the victims of the former government, we all must act within the law," he said.
According to Ivanishvili, the constitution will be brought into line with democratic norms, and the president will be stripped of excess rights, including the right to dissolve the government and parliament in his sole discretion.
Ivanishvili said that the opposition does not support the initiatives of reflecting the European orientation of Georgia in constitution; however the policy of the country is oriented on EU and US, which are the closest friends of Georgia.
He also noted improvement of relations with Russia, and the first steps taken in this direction.
According to him, Georgia has to return Abkhazia and Ossetia, and create conditions that will ensure the unity of all the peoples of Georgia and an understanding of the unity of the country.
Ivanishvili briefly reported on the work done by the government, noting that he works day and night for the development of the country.
"Georgia will start real development and get back on track," Ivanishvili said, adding that all the promises will be fulfilled in the fourth year of the tenure
His statements were punctuated by applause of 1,681 delegates and 550 guests of the congress, which was held in Tbilisi State Philharmonic.
