Following the official welcoming ceremony, presidents Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and Andris Berzins of Latvia met in private.
The presidents praised development of bilateral ties between Azerbaijan and Latvia in a variety of fields, particularly in political and economic spheres.
The sides stressed importance of mutual visits in terms of expansion of cooperation between the two countries.
The presidents expressed confidence the visit would contribute to developing the Azerbaijan-Latvia relations.
The Heads of State also exchanged views on the strengthening of relations of Azerbaijan with Latvia in the context of the Azerbaijan-EU cooperation.
Later the presidents were joined by their delegations for an expanded meeting.
Welcoming the meeting participants, President Ilham Aliyev said that Latvia-Azerbaijan relations will further develop successfully.
"Azerbaijan attaches a very big importance to your visit. I am sure that the visit will have very good results and Latvia-Azerbaijan relations will further develop successfully. We have a very good existing cooperation. This cooperation covers almost all spheres. Both our political and economic relations are developing. We have very active cooperation in international organizations as well, and we support each other. So, there is no problem between the two countries. We should only strengthen our joint efforts to achieve better cooperation. I am confident that talks and exchange of opinions during the visit will create a good basis for solving all issues," he said.
Latvian President Andris Berzins expressed gratitude for the warm welcome.
"Our delegation is very pleased to be here, and we felt specific interest in this visit. Our interest is so great that we particularly ordered a large plane. During the visit I started collecting information about your country, I've also studied the path that Azerbaijan has gone through for the last 20 years. This, definitely makes a deep impression. Soon we will mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between our countries. I think that we have already created very good and excellent relations in all spheres. This is a good foundation for even closer economic cooperation in the future," he said.
The presidents made statements, and then answered the questions of the journalists.
