Iran`s border police seized some 2.700 tons of narcotics including opium and hashish in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, Mehr news agency reported today.
According to the report, the police seized narcotics during fight against armed drug smugglers last night.
Some smugglers were injured and others escaped, the report said.
It was also reported that some 1.126 tons of opium have been seized in Kerman province by police this morning.
One of drug smugglers was killed during the police operation, the report said.
Iran shares about 900 kilometers of a common border with Afghanistan, through which about 74 percent of opium is smuggled.
According to the official statistics, there are about 2 million of drug users in Iran.
It was reported that 500 tons of drugs were seized during the last solar year (ended on March 10) in the country, with 115 tons of that amount being seized during the first 3 months of the Iranian calendar.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has recently intensified its fight against drug smuggling.
