BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 18. The chairperson of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova has met with a delegation headed by the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye Fuat Oktay, the Press and Public Relations Department of the Milli Majlis told Trend.
Speaker Gafarova, expressing satisfaction with the visit of the Turkish delegation to the Milli Majlis, highly appreciated the activities of Fuat Oktay as Vice President of Türkiye, as well as during the period when he was co-chairman of the joint intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation between Türkiye and Azerbaijan.
She congratulated the guest on his election to the post of chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye.
The chair of the Milli Majlis pointed out the importance of the last visit of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to Türkiye.
The speaker noted that Türkiye supported Azerbaijan in the 44-day second Karabakh war. And the signing of the Shusha Declaration by the heads of state of the two friendly and fraternal countries after the war raised Azerbaijani-Turkish relations to a new level.
Speaking about the inter-parliamentary ties between the two countries, the speaker said that the close cooperation of mutual friendship groups and the agreement signed in April this year between the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan and the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye will contribute to the development of relations.
In 2014, the foundation was laid for the cooperation of the Foreign Relations Committees of the Parliaments of Azerbaijan, Türkiye and Georgia on a trilateral basis, which stressed the importance of holding eight meetings in this format from the point of view of regional cooperation.
Speaker Gafarova also informed about the large-scale construction and restoration work carried out in the liberated territories after the second Karabakh war, as well as about the progress of the peace process. She expressed confidence that Armenia will take into account the new realities in the region and appreciate Azerbaijan's peace initiative.
Fuat Oktay expressed his satisfaction regarding his visit to Azerbaijan and shared his impressions of yesterday's meeting with President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. He stressed that the alliance between Azerbaijan and Türkiye, created within the framework of the Shusha Declaration, gives very serious opportunities to both countries.
He once again thanked the Azerbaijani government and its people for their brotherly support during the earthquake in Türkiye in February this year.
The chairman of the committee noted the importance of parliamentary diplomacy, prospects for cooperation within the framework of TurkPA, further expansion of ties between the two countries in economic, trade, energy, transport and other areas, as well as major projects being implemented in the region.
The sides exchanged views on other issues of interest.
