BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 19. The Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsperson) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sabina Aliyeva participated in an online session of the Board of the Ombudsman Association of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the press service of the Ombudsman’s Office told Trend.
The meeting focused on the Association's action plan for the upcoming year and discussed further collaboration in human rights protection.
During her speech, the Ombudsperson emphasized the importance of international cooperation in addressing global human rights challenges, reflecting on the work done within the association over the past year. She highlighted the active role ombudsman institutions should play in protecting human rights and stressed the need for a united effort against violations of international law.
Aliyeva pointed out the severe consequences of armed conflicts, noting that women, children, and the elderly suffer the most. She expressed regret over the disregard for international law and called on ombudsmen to work together to resolve such issues.
The Ombudsperson also singled out forced migration as one of the most pressing issues today. She informed the meeting participants that, as a result of Armenia's ethnic cleansing policies, hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis were displaced on their lands, and their fundamental rights were violated. Aliyeva provided updates on measures taken to protect the rights of these individuals and facilitate their return to their homeland.
Emphasizing the need for educational initiatives on forced migration within the OIC Ombudsman Association, Aliyeva stressed the significance of these efforts for promoting and safeguarding human rights.
