The Council of Europe (CE) respectfully approaches the decision of local self-government organs of Azerbaijan on the creation of three associations of municipalities, the president of the CE Congress of Local and Regional Powers Halvdan Skard, made such a statement at the press-conference in Baku on June 28, Trend reports.
According to him, in accordance with the decision of the heads of municipalities of Azerbaijan made at the beginning of June, an association will be established in the country at the level of cities, villages and avenues. However, activity of the association should be coordinated by certain bodies.
The Congress in interested in the support to the establishment of local democracy in Azerbaijan and this issue is one of the reasons of my first visit in the person of the president of the Congress of Local and Regional Powers, told Scard.
Speaking about the election of mayor of Baku, he noted that the Congress has repeatedly mentioned that necessity to hold elections in the capital. I think that this step would be the available in the context of development of local democracy in Azerbaijan, told the president of the Congress.
Besides, he ruled out that there will be no statement as a result of the visit to Azerbaijan.
