The member of the Azerbaijani delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), MP Gultakin Hajiyeva, informed Trend that the problem with the political prisoners in Azerbaijan is a tendency of creating artificial agiotage around the question.
According to her, this problem has already been resolved in Azerbaijan, adding that a number of small problems exist in this respect, which are expected to be resolved.
She said that previously, this problem was on the agenda and caused serious problems in relations of Azerbaijan with the Council of Europe. With great satisfaction, I would like to note that presently this question has lost its actuality. According to the experts who have been appointed by the former Secretary General of the Council of Europe, the list of the new political prisoners includes the persons, who serve their sentences for concrete crimes. There is a tendency to present these persons as political prisoners to the Council of Europe. I think that the organization such as the Council of Europe can not stay indifferent to such speculations, she said.
Hajiyeva said that several law-protectors present persons, who have committed crimes, as political prisoners. According to her, the court system of Azerbaijan sustains serious problems due to short length of its independence. I have repeatedly criticized the court system. Therefore, there can be shortfalls in the resolutions of the Azerbaijani courts. But work is carried out to eliminate them, she said, adding that the persons who are dissatisfied with the court resolutions may appeal to the higher court instances, including European Court on Human Rights. Politicizing this question can not be way out from the problem. It is high time to fight with civil rules, Hajiyeva said.
