More than $3.5 mln Transferred to Fund for Assistance to Armed Forces of Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend E.Huseynly / AZN 3.171 mln and $72,189 has been transferred to the Fund for Assistance to Armed Forces of Azerbaijan to the beginning of July, the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan reports.

The Fund for Assistance to Armed Forces of Azerbaijan was established in 2001 to strengthen the military capacity of the country which is in a conflict situation. Currently the military budget of Azerbaijan amounts to $1 bln.

The conflict between the two countries of the South Caucasus started in 1988 due to the territorial claims of Armenia against Azerbaijan. Armenia has occupied 20% of Azerbaijani lands including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven districts of the country surrounding it. Since 1992 to the present time, these territories have been under the occupation of the Armenian Forces. In 1994, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a cease-fire agreement at which time the active hostilities ended. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group ( Russia, France and USA) hold peaceful negotiations.
