Azerbaijan, Baku, 14 May / Trend corr. S.Agayeva / The literacy rate in Azerbaijan is higher than in the most other European countries, Nicolas Bernett, Deputy Director General of UNESCO on Education issues, stated.
UNESCO is prepared to render its support to the Azerbaijani government to increase the education rate, Bernett stated to journalists in a meeting dedicated to UNESCO regional conferences in support of global literacy, in Baku on 14 may.
"Literacy is a key which opens doors to public," UNESCO representative stated.
"No country can ever develop without literacy. UNESCO has been cooperating with Azerbaijan for several years and is prepared to support it in the future as well," Bernett said.
According the data by UNESCO, currently the literacy rate in world is 97% and about 9mln of world population is still illiterate.
