Cancelled or halted Euro 2008 matches to be played the next day

The Switzerland-Turkey match at Euro 2008 would have been completed later Thursday had more rain forced the game to be abandoned the previous night, the ruling body UEFA said.

A torrential downpour in the first half led to a waterlogged pitch on Wednesday in Basle amid fears at halftime that the game could not be completed. But the rain stopped and the playing field became better again in the second half as Turkey went on to win 2-1, reported dpa.

"We were happy to see how well the drainage system worked," UEFA spokesman Robert Faulkner said.

Faulkner said that a final decision to halt the match would have been with referee Lubos Michel and the UEFA delegate in the stadium.

Had worse come to worst, the game would have been completed at 1300 GMT Thursday, which is the general kickoff time for cancelled or abandoned matches to be played or completed the next day in the group stage.

From the quarter-finals onwards, these games would take place at 1600 GMT the following day as there is no more 1600 GMT match at that stage.
