Azerbaijan, Baku, 11 July/ Trend , corr K. Zarbaliyeva/ The preliminary court sitting on the suit of the Union of Freedom Supporters against Azadlig newspaper was held.

The Union demanded to outlaw the decision to hand over the founding rights of the newspaper to its staff by withdrawing these rights fro the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) and to close down the paper. The suit says that Azadlig ( Liberty) newspaper operates not as a mouthpiece of PFPA, but as a mouthpiece of its staff.

The suers demand the current management of Azadlig paper to apologize to the founders of the paper for the moral damage and to pay compensation of AZN150,000.

During the court sitting in Yasamal District Court of Baku the representative of the defendants Azar Ahmadov and Elchin Sadigli asked the court not to examine the suit as it was ungrounded.

The suers said that earlier Tahmasib Novruzov was one of the co-founders of Azadlig paper and said that they demand his share.

The representatives of the defendant said that Novruzov had never been founder of the paper. The suers could not present a document to court proving his being founder of the paper.

The court sitting will be continued on 25 July.

Azadlig paper was founded in 1989 as a mouthpiece of the Popular Front of Azerbaijan. In 1993, the staff of the paper became its founder. Popular Front refused the founding rights several years later when it became a party. As a result, the staff of the paper became its founder.

The Union of Freedom Supporters was established in January 2006.
