The Azerbaijani Presidential Media Development State Support Fund is holding an event to study major problems facing regional media outlets in the Lankaran region.

"The event aims to study the state of local media in the region," fund head Vugar Safarov told Trend today. "We are interested in studying the problems of local media. One of the fund's tasks is to allocate funds to solve the problems of media outlets in the regions."

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree to establish the fund in early 2009.

The fund aims to improve the situation with free thought, speech and media, as well as state support for media outlets.

Safarov said a decision to render assistance to develop regional media will be made after getting familiarized with the situation in the regions.

Fund members and editors-in-chief participated in the event.

Over 4,000 media outlets are registered in Azerbaijan. Presently only 600 function.

Nearly 400 newspapers and magazines are published and over 20 television channels operate in Azerbaijan.
