Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov instructed the State Tourism and Sport Committee today to prepare to organize and conduct international athletic competitions.

Berdimuhammedov made the statement at a special governmental meeting, noting "the need to properly maintain athletic facilities to host regular sporting events in the country," the Turkmen Altyn Asyr television channel reported.

Berdimuhammedov also instructed his government to facilitate athletic development by building sports-oriented schools and facilities. Plans include building several schools by late this year.

Turkmenistan also plans to implement a major project to construct an Olympic village by 2015 in Ashgabat. Polimex (Turkey) and SSS - Consolidated Contractors Company (Lebanon) are implementing the project.

Valued at several billion dollars, the project is the largest of its kind in Central Asia, covering 150 hectares. The complex will include over 30 athletic facilities, including a football stadium seating 60,000 spectators, a hockey stadium seating 10,000 spectators, an indoor cycling track, tennis courts, swimming pools, fencing halls, and boxing, wrestling and weightlifting facilities.
