Over the past five years, the Azerbaijani Emergency Situations Ministry has examined about 2,973 buildings and sites where mass gatherings traditionally take place in 11 Baku districts, Minister Kamaladdin Heydarov said at an event dedicated to the ministry's fifth anniversary today.
He said the work has been submitted to the appropriate structures for investigation.
"Over the past five years, the ministry took part in extinguishing 25,434 fires, while 1,183 people have been rescued during fires, 185 of whom were elderly people and children," he said.
The fires caused material damage amounting to 28.563 million manat, and killed 224 people and wounded 373. Rescuers were able to rescue 943 people and property worth 1.241 million manat.
He said the ministry's staff was able to rescue 2,291 people h from drowning in 2006-2010.
The ministry examined about 2,621 small-sized vessels, as well as gas stations and storages of explosives, over the past five years. The ministry carefully audited annually more than 70,000 sites and held fire-technical checks in 50,000 of them.
The ministry gave 300,000 relevant to the inspected objects, of which 140,000 have been fulfilled. The ministry's staff conducted inspection of gas facilities in more than 20,000 institutions and over 125,000 homes.
A ministerial delegation led by Heydarov visited the Alley of Honors and laid a wreath at the tomb of Azerbaijani national leader Heydar Aliyev.
The delegation also visited the Alley of Martyrs and laid flowers on the graves of those who died for the independence of Azerbaijan.
Turkish Vice Prime Minister and State Minister Cemil Cicek also attended the anniversary event.
