The youth group attempted to hold a rally organized by the World Azerbaijanis Congress in front of the Iranian embassy in Azerbaijan.
The slogan "Stop draining Lake Urmia" was voiced at the rally held as a sign of protest against draining Lake Urmia and violating the human rights of 35 million Azerbaijanis living in Iran, Trend correspondent reported reported from the scene.
The participants of the rally delivered a resolution of the protest action to the embassy staff.
A barrel of water was placed in front of the embassy as a sign of protest against draining Lake Urmia.
The police did not allow holding the rally as it was unauthorized and dispersed it.
The Lake Urmia is the second most salty lake in Iranian Azerbaijan Province.
Iran's largest lake, Urmia has dried up almost a third, director of the Iranian State Department for Lakes Protection Ali Nazardust said earlier. Building dams, decrease in rainfall and other negative factors led to drying up of the Lake Urmia.
At present, the salinity of the lake's water is 330 percent, Nazardust said. Earlier, this figure was 160-170 percent. Earlier the reservoir covered 5,000 square meters.
