On October 18, at 21:20 (GMT +4), the Coast Guard of Azerbaijan’s State Border Service received information from the State Maritime Administration that the crew of the Iranian Nazmehr cargo ship, 21 miles away from the island of Pirallahi, in the central part of the Caspian Sea, requested urgent aid over mass poisoning of its members, the State Border Service said in a message Oct. 19.

The information was transferred to a border patrol vessel of the Coast Guard that was keeping watch at Azerbaijan’s state border, and the vessel headed towards the location of the cargo ship.

At 03:00, the border patrol vessel approached the Nazmehr cargo ship, taking on board seven crew members. First aid was provided to them on the vessel, after which the patrol vessel headed for the Absheron port.

Doctors were called to provide emergency medical aid. Before their arrival, three members of the Nazmehr crew died.

The eight crew members were placed in the toxicology department of the Clinical Medical Center No. 1.
