BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. Safeguarding the world entrusted to us by the Almighty is our sacred responsibility. The conflicts, wars, and atrocities unfolding across the globe not only impact humanity but also jeopardize the future of our natural environment and its delicate climate, Chairman of the Caucasus Muslims Office Sheikhul Islam Allahshukur Pashazade told reporters on the sidelines of COP29, Trend reports.
Pashazade noted that COP29 is convened to tackle pressing climate-related challenges.
"Hosting a major international event like COP29 in Azerbaijan, under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, highlights our nation's commitment to tolerance and inclusivity. Today, world leaders, public figures, and religious representatives have convened in our country, a testament to the successful and forward-thinking policies adopted by Azerbaijan.
I hope that the decisions made at this summit will have a profound impact on global events. Our lands, which have been liberated from prolonged occupation, have suffered extensive destruction over the past 30 years. The discussions here must address not only environmental issues but also promote peace and reconstruction in regions that have endured such devastation," he added.
To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) has started in Baku. The decision was made at the plenary session of COP28 held in Dubai on December 11 last year.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
