Law on Freedom of Religion Should Toughen Up: MP

Azerbaijan, Baku /корр. Trend I.Alizade / The Deputy Chairwoman of Azerbaijan Parliament's Permanent Commission on International and Inter-Parliamentary Relations and also Deputy Head of the Azerbaijan delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Gultakin Hajiyeva, stated that it needs to toughen up the Law on Freedom of Religion.

According to her, presently the influence of various missioner organizations is increasing throughout Azerbaijan. Christian and Islamic untraditional sectors spread within the Country. "In the future, it may lead as a threat for Azerbaijan. Therefore, it needs to strengthen the relevant legislation and the laws should be capable to regulate religious relations," she stressed.

According to Hajiyeva, it needs to hold enlightenment work in the education institutions with regards to the traditions of worldwide nationality and the true essence of Islam.

The Law on Freedom of Religion was adopted in 1992.
