Residents of Azerbaijani District Exposed to Police Chief’s Torture

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend K.Zarbalieva / The residents of the district of Astara in south Azerbaijan, have been exposed to torture by the head of the police precinct.

Elchin Behbudov, the chairman of the Anti-torture Committee, said that Parvana Ahmadova complained to the Committee regarding Vugar Mammadyarov, the head of police precinct who she claims exposed her and her son to terrible torture.

According to Ahmadova, on 26 July she and her son were taken to the police precinct and refused to pay a bribe to Mammadyarov. The victim said that after being subjected to torture she could not move. The police chief threatened to arrest Ahmadova's husband and son unless she stopped complaining.

Ahmadova said that she will commit suicide if the policeman continues to threaten her.

According to Behbutov, the Committee received earlier complaints on Mamadyarov. The chairman of the Committee said that he was going to appeal to Ramil Usubov, the Azerbaijani Interior Minister to take appropriate action against Mamadyarov.
