Kazakhstan's coal consumption down year-on-year

Total proved coal reserves in Kazakhstan amounted to 25.6 billion tons as of the end of 2019, Trend reports with reference to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy.

The report said that Kazakhstan’s proved coal reserves account for 2.4 percent of the total coal reserves globally.

The report said that coal production in Kazakhstan stood at 2.08 exajoules in 2019, which is 2.4 percent less compared to 2.18 exajoules in 2018. Kazakhstan’s coal extraction accounted for 1.2 percent of total coal extraction volumes globally.

Coal consumption was 1.67 exajoules in 2019, which is 1.9 percent less than in 2018 (1.7). Furthermore, Kazakhstan accounted for 1.1 percent of coal consumption globally.

In turn, electricity generation stood at 108.4 terawatt-hours in Kazakhstan in 2019, which indicates a 1 percent growth year-on-year (107.3 terawatt-hours in 2018). Kazakhstan accounted for 0.4 percent of electricity generation globally.

The report also said that 78.1 terawatt-hours of electricity generated in Kazakhstan in 2019 was generated from coal. In turn, 20.8 terawatt-hours of electricity generated in Kazakhstan accounted for generation using natural gas, 10 terawatt-hours were generated from hydroelectric plants, etc.
