Exxon Mobil Chemical expanding Rotterdam plant

Exxon Mobil Corp.'s Houston subsidiary Exxon Mobil Chemical said it will expand production capacity at a plant in Rotterdam in The Netherlands.

The expansion would boost the plant's paraxylene production by 25 percent, Exxon Mobil Chemical said. Paraxylene is used primarily as a feedstock for the manufacturing an acid used in the production of plastic bottles.

Benzene production will be boosted by 20 percent. Benzene is an industrial solvent that is also used in plastics productions, as well as the production of drugs, synthetic rubber and dyes.

Financial details of the investment were not disclosed.

Exxon Mobil Chemical is a unit of Irving-based oil giant Exxon Mobil Corp.
