( Worldcarfans ) - By request of the Pope, Head of the Catholic Church, himself, Mercedes has made a one-off open-top G 500 Popemobile which took over two years to develop. The Pope will use the Vatican Mystic White Cabriolet for his Wednesday audiences on St. Peter's Square in the Vatican.
Besides this G 500 Cabrio, the Pope also has an M and S-Class at his disposal. Mercedes provided their first car to Pope Pius XI in 1930, a Nurburg 460 pullman limousine. And even though the Popemobile has almost 300 hp at its disposal, it is not likely to be driven fast or taken off-road.
The new Popemobile is equipped with a folding windscreen and hand-rails. The interior is of course white too and the access steps in the rear are lined in red.
