Ukraine, Kiev, Dec. 22 / Trend , Z.Novosvitskiy /"Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko opposes the resignation of Vladimir Stelmakh from the chairman position in the National Bank. Yushchenko belives that the chairman must correct the existing financial situation," Alexander Shlapak, the first deputy secretary of Ukrainian President, said.

"Under today's conditions the President opposes the resignation of Stelmakh. Chairman of the National Bank must correct the situation, to which, unfortunately, we have reached. He has chance and possibilities for this. President considers incorrect to 'involve' the state into one additional campaign on, so called, election of the chairman of National bank with all consequences", Shlapak said.

On Dec. 18, Ukrainian PM Yulia Tymoshenko said that she asked the President to present a declaration about retiring of the chairman of the National bank Stelmakh because of errors in currency policy (since October 2008 the national currency of hryvnia devalued to USD by two times). On the same day the Supreme Rada registered the project of declaration concerning retiring of Stelmakh from the position of chairman of the National Bank.

Furthermore, the head of the Presidential Secretariat Victor Baloga also confirmed the intentions of the President not to free Stelmakh from the post. According to Baloga, Tymoshenko attempts to free chairman Stelmakh and replace him on the post, a spokesperson from the presidential administration said.

Under the law on the National bank of Ukraine", chairman of National bank, who is appointed to five years period, is freed from the post by Supreme Rada.

Stelmakh was appointed as the chairman of the National Bank of Ukraine under President's order in December 2004.
