Georgia, Tbilisi, July 29 / Trend, N. Kirtskhalia /
The EU and Georgia will sign an agreement today patenting 18 geographic names of Georgian wines in the EU, the Georgian Foreign Ministry told Trend.
Based on the agreement, the well-known Georgian wines "Khvanchkara," "Tsinandali," "Akhasheni" and "Kindzmarauli" will be protected from falsification on EU markets.
All 27 EU member countries will undertake the obligation not to sell counterfeit Georgian wines in the future.
According to Georgian winemakers, counterfeit Georgian wine is often produced abroad and sold on the European market, which undermines the image of the original Georgian products.
Georgian winemakers reorientated their businesses toward Western markets after Russia declared an embargo on Georgian wine in 2006.
