Iran to increase cargo transit up to 25 million tons

Iran to increase volume of cargo transit by 25 million tons by the end of the Fifth Development Plan (2010-2015), IRNA reported quoting Deputy of Road and Urban Development Minister Shahriyar Afandizadeh as saying.

"The volume of cargo transit through Iran increased by 34 percent to more than 5.9 million tons during the last solar year (ended on March20, 2011)," he said.

The volume of cargo transit in the first three months of the current solar year was 2.4 million tons.

"We are trying to increase the volume to about 12 million tons this year while the necessary measures to increase the volume by 15 million tons in the next two years are underway", he added.

Iran 's annual GDP from foreign transit reached $3 billion during the last Solar year, as over 100 countries continued to choose Iran as the transit destination, testifying to its secure routes and low fuel costs.
