Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan top business players see good trade opportunities

The Turkmen-Uzbek business forum is underway in Ashgabat, local media reported on Thursday.

An Uzbek representative delegation headed by Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade Elyor Ganiev arrived to participate in this event. The delegation also included heads and representatives of leading companies, enterprises and organisations in the country, Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper said.

These are: Uzbekistan Railways, Uzbekenergo and Uzprommashimpeks. Also Uzbekneftegaz national holding company, Uzavtosanoat company, Aggregate Plant and Tashkent Tractor Plant companies, Elholding scientific-production association, Uzpharmsanoat, Uzstroymaterialy company, as well as the Uzbek Chamber of Commerce and Industry are amongst them.

Representatives of several leading ministries, departments and agencies of the country, as well as the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Turkmen Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs attended the forum from the Turkmen side.

According to the Turkmen Dovlet Khabarlary state news service, Minister Ganiev stressed the existence of opportunities for intensification of bilateral cooperation. He has reaffirmed the commitment of the Uzbek side to enhance and strengthen the multi-faceted business contacts with Turkmen partners.

It was stressed that trade and economic cooperation acquires new meaning. The trade turnover between the two countries has been increasing. "Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan have all the opportunities to increase bilateral trade volume and to expand the commodity nomenclature, to intensify the investment activity, to implement joint projects in various sectors, in particular, through entrepreneurship," Watan newspaper said.

Forum delegates stressed the fuel energy sector, as well as the transport and communication sector as a priority.

Cooperation in the transport and communication sector has been stipulated by the geographic location of the two neighbouring countries and their transit potential.

The two countries are connected with a number of major projects. The gas pipeline was opened from Turkmenistan to China via Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan in December 2009. The parties considered opportunities in the implementation of the railway project which would connect Central Asia with Persian Gulf countries.

The cooperation opportunities have been discussed during the negotiations between representatives of ministries and departments, enterprises, private companies and firms of the two neighbouring countries. The two sides exchanged the views on the prospects in such areas as production and supply of industrial, energy, and laboratory equipment, agricultural machinery, construction materials, furniture, food, light and pharmaceutical industries.
