Iran is working to expand its road and rail transportation capacity to 20 million tonnes annually, Deputy Minister and Head Road Maintenance and Transportation, Shahriar Afandizadeh told Mehr news.

Last year, 10.2 million tonnes of goods were transported via the country's roads and rail system, Afandizadeh said.

Based on projections about the country's future needs, infrastructure projects are in various phases of development, construction and renovation to be able to handle the transit of 20 million tonnes of goods annually, said Afandizadeh.

Strengthening its transportation infrastructure will make Iran ready to become a key point in several important transportation corridors.
