Azerbaijan’s agricultural sector grows by almost 5 percent in 2013

In 2013 Azerbaijan's agricultural output amounted to 5244.6 million manats at actual prices, increasing by 4.9 percent as compared to 2012, according to an Azerbaijani State Statistical Committee's report.

"The growth of crop production amounted to 4.2 percent and livestock production's growth stood at 5.5 percent," according to the report.

Last year 2,961,900 tons of crops were collected from 1,073,700 hectares of sown area of cereals (including corn), which is 5.7 percent more than in 2012, according to preliminary data. The cereal yield in the past year was 27.6 quintals per hectare.

Some 64.1 percent of cereals produced in 2013 accounted for wheat (1,898,100 tons), and seven percent accounted for corn (208,200 tons).

During this period some 3,500 tons of tobacco leaf in dry weight, as well as 44.800 tons of raw cotton were collected as well.

Households produced some 852,900 tons of fruits and berries (5.3 percent more than in the same period of 2012), 154,100 tons of grapes (annual growth - 2.1 percent), as well as 568 tons of tea leaves.

In 2013 the country produced 514,400 tons of meat in live weight, 1,820,500 tons of milk, 1,401.5 million chicken eggs and 16.8 tons of wool.

The meat production increased by 4.2 percent as compared with 2012, and milk production grew by 5.9 percent, chicken eggs by 14.2 percent, wool by 1.9 percent.

The official exchange rate for January 28 is 0.7843 AZN/USD.
