WB attracts contractor to restore solid waste landfill in Baku

A tender for the Balakhani landfill restoration was announced in Azerbaijan as part of the World Bank project on waste management.

The bids for participation in the tender will be accepted no later than June 30, 2014 at 15:00, according to a group implementing the project under the Azerbaijani Ministry of Economy and Industry.

All bids must be confirmed by a guarantee to the amount of $700,000. The contract will be awarded for two years.

The bidders may purchase the tender documents by paying 250 manats or $ 300.

The work as part of the tender will be funded through additional funding of the project to the amount of $ 42 million.

It is planned to construct the dams along the landfill and its division into parts, install the coating system for the collection and disposal of gases and water (including wastewater), wastewater collection system by using mechanical and electrical installations, construct the necessary roads at the landfill site, implement the landscape work and so on to restore the Balakhani landfill.

Around 1.8 million tons of municipal solid waste is generated in the Great Baku per year, according to the WB calculations. The bank specialists predict a doubling of this figure for the next 20 years due to the population growth and increasing income of the population.

The project was approved by the WB Board of Directors in June 2008. Its implementation began in 2009. The total cost of the project amounted to $41.5 million, of which some $29.5 million was the share of the WB loan and the remaining part was financed by the Azerbaijani government.

A 20-year solid waste management strategy in the capital, a plan for the development of the waste collection system were prepared as part of the project. The primary research on waste management in Azerbaijan was conducted.

The loan agreement on additional financing with the bank was signed in January 2014.

The World Bank's investment portfolio in Azerbaijan consists of 17 projects. The bank has financed some 54 projects worth of over $3 billion since the country's accession to it.
