The French company Areva is preparing a feasibility study (FS) for the National Center for Nuclear Research on the project of construction of a research reactor in Azerbaijan, said the chairman of the JSC Adil Garibov at the board meeting of the ministry of communications and high technologies of Azerbaijan dedicated to the results of 2014.

He said that in case of successful solution of issues related to the agreement and security, the work within implementation of the task can be started by 2016.

"As for the other equipment, particularly equipment for proton accelerator, the electron accelerator and ionizing radiation sources, the negotiations on this issue have already been conducted with the executive agencies, and all their details found their solution," he said. "It remains only to solve the issues of investment character."

It was recently decided to introduce a system of the sterilization rig, according to Garibov.

Plans are for the rig to be commissioned in the first half of 2015. Two million AZN were allocated for the implementation of this task in 2015.

"In the near future Azerbaijan will receive isotopic sources necessary for the work of a sterilization rig," said the head of the company. "In the near future, proposals for work, which is scheduled to be implemented at the sterilization rig, will be prepared."

He said that in 2015, the JSC will decide on the issue of location for the construction of a research reactor. In addition, the construction of a research reactor in Sumgait may be considered in the future.

A land area of 15 hectares should be allotted for the construction of a research reactor. Office buildings, data center and other infrastructure necessary for research and scientific works will be also located on the territory.

At present, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has approved two projects of the National Center for Nuclear Research of Azerbaijan. The projects, previously submitted to the IAEA, cover the periods of 2015-2018 and 2016-2018.

The cost of each project is estimated at 400,000-500,000 euros, and they are aimed mainly at the industry personnel training.

The official exchange rate for January 19 is 0. 9065 AZN / EUR.

Decree on the establishment of National Center for Nuclear Research JSC under the ministry of communications and high technologies of Azerbaijan for the use of nuclear technology in peaceful purposes was signed by the head of state on May 8, 2014.
