By Daniyar Mukhtarov - Trend:

Kazakhstan plans to increase the share of electricity generation from renewable sources to 3 percent by 2020, the country's Energy Minister Vladimir Shkolnik said Jan.26.

He made the remarks while speaking during the 'government hour' in Majlis (the parliament's lower house).

Shkolnik added that it is planned to increase the share of electricity generation from renewable sources to 10 percent by 2030 and to 50 percent by 2050. "It will be possible to achieve such figures with the generation in nuclear power plants."

The minister said the abovementioned figures are reflected in Kazakhstan's concept for transition to 'green' economy.

He said currently, the distribution of fuel types in electricity generation in Kazakhstan as of 2014 is as follows: 73 percent of electricity was generated from coal, 18 percent - from gas and 8 percent - from wind farms.

"The renewable power generation, including small hydro power plants account for only 0.6 percent, which is a very small figure even while Kazakhstan is an energy exporting country," Shkolnik said.

He said the electricity consumption in Kazakhstan stood at 91.6 billion kilowatt hours in 2014.

The electricity generation totaled 93.9 billion kilowatt hours, which is 2.1 percent more than in 2013.

Kazakhstan imported 644 million kilowatt hours of electricity and exported 2 billion kilowatt hours in 2014.
