By Huseyn Hasanov – Trend:

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov pointed to the need for electrification of railways at a meeting of the government, the Turkmen Dovlet Habarlary state news agency reported Sept. 27.

Berdimuhamedov said that it is necessary to combine objective economic interests and realities of international partnership.

It should be recalled that at the current stage, a project is being prepared to establish an open joint stock company Turkmen Railways.

It was previously reported that the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway will give a strong momentum to the development of the Caspian region. Total length of the railway, running from steppes of Kazakhstan through the Karakum Desert to the mountain province of Golestan in northern Iran, has been brought to 900 kilometers.

The project was completed in 2014. The goal of the North-South corridor is to ensure the transit communication between countries of Northern Europe and Russia with the countries of the Persian Gulf, the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia through Iran.

Moreover, the ceremony of launching a new railway from the Turkmen town of Atamyrat to the Afghan settlement of Akin was held in November 2016. This section is a part of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan transnational railway project.
