Turkey talks on launching new electric train lines in Ankara, Istanbul

New railway line of electric trains in Ankara will be launched at the end of this year, a source in the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications of Turkey told Trend Oct. 11.

Construction of the new railway line of electric trains in Ankara envisages creation of an additional section connecting with the railway system “Baskentray” between the settlements of Sincan and Kayas (located near Ankara), according to the source.

The construction of the new electric train line in Ankara started in 2016.

Electric train lines in Ankara were commissioned in 1972. The total length of railway lines for electric trains in Ankara is 215 kilometers, and the number of stations reaches 26.

The source noted that in mid-2018, it is also expected to launch a new railway line of electric trains in Istanbul. It should be noted that for the first time, electrified railways for electric trains in Istanbul were commissioned in 1969 and the total number of stations on the line now reaches 19.

The movement of electric trains at the Istanbul section was suspended in 2013 within the construction of the new railway line.

The first railway in Turkey was built in 1860 in the province of Izmir in the west of the country, and the railway’s length was 357 kilometers.
