By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:

Turkey has started restoration work on Sudan’s Suakin Island, a source in the Turkish government told Trend Feb. 21.

A number of state officials of Turkey are on the island in order to get acquainted with the progress of the restoration work being carried out there.

In December 2017, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Sudan and an agreement on renting the Suakin Island to Turkey for a period of 99 years was reached.

Turkey is ready to carry out large-scale restoration work, restore infrastructure and build a shipyard for the repair of warships and civil vessels on the Suakin Island.

For many centuries, Suakin Island, situated to the north-east off Sudan, has been an important trading port in the Red Sea and one of the centers of Islamic civilization on the coast of East Africa.
