Tehran, Iran, Sept. 27
Trend:
Iranian energy minister said the plan to transfer water from the Caspian Sea in drought-ridden areas is undergoing final reviews and the results will be announced soon.
“The studies on the water transfer plan are underway and we will brief people on that soon,” Reza Ardakanian said on Thursday, IRNA reported on September 27.
He added that such plans should be accompanied with consumption management in order to be successful.
Noting that there are currently 100 water plans underway across the country, the minister said the plans need more government funding.
According to reports, Iran plans to transfer water from the Caspian Sea in the north to the drought-ridden Semnan Province.
However, since its presentation, the project has raised environmental concerns. Experts believe the project will result in large-scale deforestation in Hyrcanian Forest that borders the southern shores of Caspian Sea.
The sea is bordered by five countries: Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
