Kyrgyzstan to export surplus potato to Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan

The Ministry of Agriculture of Kyrgyzstan is negotiating with the Uzbek side on the export of surplus potatoes, left due to price drop, Uzbek media reported citing the meeting of President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbay Jeenbekov and Minister of Agriculture, Food Reclamation and Industry Nurbek Murashev.

The minister said that the price of certain agricultural products, namely potatoes, in 2018 is lower than last year and amounts to about 5-7 soms per kilogram. In 2017, the price of potatoes was 8-10 soms.

"The market analysis has been carried out. In October every year, the price of potatoes is slightly lower than in other months. We expect prices to rise from mid-November. Negotiations are currently underway with Uzbekistan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan on the export of potatoes and other products," Murashev said.

According to him, in 2017, the potato was sown on 83,200 hectares of land, in 2018 - on 84,500 hectares, the total harvest amounted to 1.5 million tons, while the internal demand of the republic is 800,000-900,000 tons. About 600,000 tons of potatoes will be exported.
