Iran's Mahabad sees increase in sugar beet harvest

In the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2018), sugar beet farmers of Mahabad county of Iran's West Azerbaijan province have handed over more than 82,000 tons of harvest to sugar factories of the province, said Jafar Alizadeh, a department head at Mahabad Agricultural Jihad Organization, Trend reports via IRNA.

Last year, 1,860 hectares of the county's fields were allocated for sugar beet, Alizadeh said.

Some 60,000 tons of sugar beet were delivered to Urmia sugar factory and the rest of the sugar beet was supplied to Khoy sugar factories, he said.

In the current Iranian year, 50 tons of sugar beet are harvested from each hectare, which is five tons more compared to the previous year, Alizadeh said.

Sugar beet harvest starts on Sept. 6 and ends on Dec. 21.

Mahabad is located in the south of Iran's West Azerbaijan province and has 80,000 hectares of crop fields and orchards.
