By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Wheat flour in Georgia has already risen in price, so no further price increases are expected in the near future, said the Head of the Association of Wheat Groups of Georgia Levan Silagava, Trend reports via the Georgian media outlets.

In September 2019, bread and bakery products rose in price by 10.8 percent in Georgia compared to the same period last year.

Silagava said that Georgia imports some 90 percent of wheat.

"Local production is only 10 percent, which is quite small and does not allow insuring internal risks. Accordingly, the price of bread and wheat in Georgia depends on the international market. It is necessary to take into account the price of raw materials, as well as the cost of transportation, which is tied to the rate of lari," he said.

According to Silagava, the price of flour is also affected by prices in the international market. The price increase occurred in December 2018, when the cost of one bag of flour reached about 50 lari ($16.84).

“Then a decrease was recorded, the price of one bag of flour became about 44 lari ($14.81). Considering that there were some fluctuations in the world market and the lari depreciated, the price returned to the indicator of December 2018,” Silagava said.
