Reasons for possible rise in price of coffee in Georgia revealed

BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 11

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

The reason for the possible rise in price of coffee in Georgia is the increase in prices on the world market, Trend reports citing Georgian media outlets.

As reported, in Georgia, the rise in price of coffee is expected in a few months, since at this stage, importers have accumulated a considerable supply of product purchased at the previous, lower prices.

Coffee prices have risen by 25 percent on average over recent weeks in world markets. In November 2019, international coffee prices rose to a record high over the past 12 months, according to International Coffee Organization.

“As a rule, it takes several months for the consequences of the rise in price of coffee on the international market to reach Georgia; thus, the rise in price of coffee in Georgia is expected in the summer of 2020,” said Head of the Georgian coffee company Ramaz Tsikhelashvili.

If by that time coffee does not fall in price on world markets, then the next batches would be imported at a new, higher price, he said.

“It does not depend on us, and the whole point is in international prices. This applies to all types of coffee. We import coffee from Indonesia, where prices fell last year, but this year they rose,” Tsikhelashvili said.
