Azerbaijan reveals cattle import volumes

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 26

By Eldar Janashvili - Trend:

Over the past ten years, 33,020 heads of different breeds of cattle have been imported to Azerbaijan, Trend reports with reference to the country's Agriculture Ministry.

According to the ministry, Azerbaijan purchased 22,190 heads of the Holstein Friesian cattle, 9,700 heads of Simmental cattle, 627 heads of Charolais cattle, 385 heads of Schwyzer cattle, 26 heads of Aberdeen-Angus cattle and 127 heads of buffalos.

The main goals of the procurement are to increase productivity by improving the breed composition of cattle in development of livestock production, as well as improving genetic potential of animals through artificial insemination, as well as supporting initiatives of producers themselves to import breeding animals, said the ministry.

During 2019, 1,493 heads of breeding animals were leased to farmers on favorable terms. Also, 363 heads of local breeding animals were sold to farmers.

Besides, last year, artificial insemination of 168,900 heads of cattle was carried out, which is 11,830 heads, or 7.5 percent, more than in 2018.

At the same time, last year, 82,500 head of calves were obtained by artificial insemination, which is 19.5 percent more than in 2018.
