Georgia increases sugar imports

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 10

Sugar imports to Georgia increased by 21.4 percent from January through February 2020 year-on-year, Trend reports citing data of Georgian National Statistical Service (Geostat).

According to Geostat, in the reporting period, 9,233.8 tons of sugar worth $3.4 million were imported into Georgia.

Meanwhile, sugar imports to Georgia amounted to $2.7 million in monetary terms from January through February 2019.

From January through February 2020, Georgia imported 6,292.4 tons of sugar worth $2.4 million from Poland, 2,682.8 tons worth $940,000 from Russia, 193.4 tons worth $80,100 from France, 14.1 tons worth $17,900 from Ukraine, 25 tons worth $14,600 from Colombia, 20.8 tons sugar worth $13,700 from Azerbaijan, and 5.2 tons of sugar worth $9,900 from Italy.

Meanwhile, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Natia Turnava noted earlier that the country is focused on import substitution and plans to increase local production in the future.

“The government has decided to help and support local production of sugar,” the minister said.

According to her, the sugar industry is one of the sectors that Georgia intends to develop.
