Iran looks to increase red meat production

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 14

It is estimated that 6 trillion rials (about $142 million) will be allocated from the National Development Fund of Iran for the plan to increase red meat production in the areas inhabited by nomads in Iran in the current Iranian year (began March 20, 2020), Iran's Deputy Minister of Agriculture Jihad and Head of the Iran Nomad Affairs Organization Karamali Qandali said, Trend reports citing the organization’s website.

According to Qandali, 4.2 trillion rials (about $100 million) funds were allocated for the mentioned purpose last Iranian year (March 21, 2019 - March 20, 2020).

Qandali said that a number of other steps are being taken to support the employment of the nomads. Last year, about 2.53 trillion rials (about $60.2 million) were allocated for infrastructure, provision of drinking water.

The deputy minister said that about 2 trillion rials (about $47.6 million) are to be spent on drinking water supply projects this year as well.

"In addition, efforts are being made to use the potential of nomads in tourism, handicrafts, dairy and other products," he said.

Nomads produce 190,000 tons (about 25 percent) of red meat produced in Iran. There are about 1.2 million nomads in Iran.
