Iran reveals volume of cargo transported from Mazandaran Province

About 4 million tons of cargo was transported from Mazandaran Province (northern Iran) to other provinces of Iran during the first three months of the current Iranian year (March 20-June 20, 2020), Director General of Iran Road Maintenance & Transportation Organization’s branch in Mazandaran Province Abbasali Najafi, Trend reports citing the organization.

The director general said that the transported products were mainly, livestock products, citrus fruits, dairy products, essential products, medical supplies and construction materials.

Najafi added that despite the spread of the coronavirus in Iran, the volume of cargo transported from Mazandaran Province has not changed much.

Najafi stressed that 131 transport companies operate in Mazandaran Province with more than 11,000 trucks at their disposal.

As much as 4.4 million tons of cargo was transported from Iran's Mazandaran Province in the first three months of last year. In total, about 19 million tons of cargo was transported from the province in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 to March 20, 2020).

Iran continues to monitor the coronavirus situation in the country. According to recent reports from the Iranian officials, over 212,500 people have been infected 9,996 people have already died. Meanwhile, over 172,000 have reportedly recovered from the disease.

The country continues to apply strict measures to contain the further spread. Reportedly, the disease was brought to Iran by a businessman from Iran's Qom city, who went on a business trip to China, despite official warnings. The man died later from the disease.

The Islamic Republic only announced its first infections and deaths from the coronavirus on Feb. 19.

The outbreak in the Chinese city of Wuhan - which is an international transport hub - began at a fish market in late December 2019.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11 declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Some sources claim the coronavirus outbreak started as early as November 2019.
