Azerbaijan begins large-scale sowing of corn

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 26

By Eldar Janashvili - Trend:

Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Agriculture plans to plant corn on more than 50,000 hectares in the coming days, Trend reports citing the ministry.

Sowing will be carried out in 35 districts of the country and re-sowing of corn will be carried out on the territory of the Agrarian Scientific and Innovation Center of Azerbaijan on an area of 560 hectares, noted the ministry.

The ministry emphasized that the sowing process has already begun on the territory of regional agricultural research and innovation centers located in Beylagan and Kurdamir districts.

Director of the Center Imran Jumshudov said that after harvesting autumn grains, the field remains empty for 90-120 days for re-sowing grain.

During this season, an additional secondary culture can be obtained using plants with a short growing season. In particular, in 80-90 days, corn, sunflower, soy, millet and other cultivated plants can be grown, he added.

As a result of repeated sowing, farmers get two crops a year, effectively using the sown area and get about 50-60 centners of corn and 300-400 centners of green mass, said Jumshudov.

The decision also made to provide farmers with support for re-sowing corn in order to efficiently use the arable land, improve the sowing structure in free areas after grain harvesting and further enrich the country's forage reserves.

The Center’s estimations show that there is a potential for corn transplantation on 100,000 hectares in the Aran economic region. After the completion of grain harvesting, farmers who will re-plant corn in free territories will be paid a lump sum of 60 manat ($35.2) per hectare to pay for the supply of seeds. The seeds will be purchased by the farmers themselves, and the funds will be transferred to the farmer's card by the Agrarian Credit and Development Agency.
