Georgia reveals volume of exported hazelnuts

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 16

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Some 10,179 tons of hazelnuts worth $53.8 million were exported from Georgia from August 1 through November 15, 2020, Trend reports via the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture.

Georgian hazelnuts are mainly exported to EU markets, namely Germany (2,977 tons), Italy (1,966 tons), Czech Republic (550 tons), Poland (320 tons), Lithuania (289 tons), Bulgaria (279 tons), Spain (308 tons), France (218 tons), Greece (97 tons), Estonia (88 tons), Latvia (62 tons), Luxembourg (60 tons), Slovakia (64 tons), Austria (22 tons) and Croatia ( 10 tons).

Georgian hazelnuts are also exported to countries such as Russia (496 tons), Belarus (240 tons), Turkey (530 tons), Ukraine (176 tons), Algeria (173 tons), Brazil (186 tons), Canada (114 tons), Saudi Arabia (74 tons), Mexico (67 tons), Jordan (38 tons), Syria (50 tons), Switzerland (47 tons), Iraq (24 tons), Great Britain (22 tons), US (19 tons) and others.

Hazelnut production (respectively exports) has been declining since 2016 due to the spread of Asian bugs and fungal diseases, and in 2018 reached a minimum mark of 17 thousand tons. The high-quality hazelnut harvest in 2020 is the result of a large-scale joint action by the relevant services and farmers.
