Azerbaijani winemakers’ production down in 2020

BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 2

Azerbaijani winemakers’ production decreased by more than 50 percent in 2020, Elchin Madatov, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Wine Producers and Exporters Association, told Trend on March 2.

“There has been a decline both in the domestic market and in the export of wine since early 2020,” Madatov added.

"Azerbaijan’s production and sales of alcoholic beverages and wine sharply decreased,” chairman of the association said. “The volume of wine production in 2020 amounted to slightly more than 300,000 decaliters while export decreased by 44.8 percent. The volume of export in monetary terms amounted to only $4.03 million in 2020. The production and export of cognac spirits decreased by 60 percent."

“The products of Azerbaijani wineries are available in all chain and food stores throughout the country and anyone can freely purchase any drink in grocery stores,” chairman of the association added.

The main exporters of Azerbaijani wine Sheki, Jalilabad, Ganja, Goygol wineries, as well as a number of other private companies are engaged in the production of alcoholic beverages.

The wine production volume in Azerbaijan in 2020 amounted to over 500,000 decaliters. A record grape harvest - more than 190,000 tons was collected in Azerbaijan in 2019, which is by 30 percent more than a year earlier.
