The EU remains committed to enhancing cooperation with Azerbaijan, European Commission’s (EC) Spokesperson Ana Pisonero told Trend.

Pisonero noted that EU is Azerbaijan’s first trading partner, but also its first investment partner – including in the non-oil sector.

“The EU supports economic diversification of Azerbaijan and promotes reforms to improve the business climate in the country. This includes promoting the rule of law and judicial certainty for individuals and economic entities, support to Vocational Education, Regional and Rural Development as well as assistance to SMEs,” Pisonero said.

She pointed out that with the global pandemic the EU has stepped up support to Azerbaijan to strengthen its health resilience through support last year for Personal Protective Equipment and this year on vaccine readiness and deployment and its socio-economic recovery.

She also emphasized that the EU businesses and individuals are among the largest foreign investors in Azerbaijan, both in the oil and non-oil sectors.

“Over 400 EU companies were doing business in Azerbaijan in 2019,” Pisonero said.
