Ban on buckwheat imports from Russia not to affect Georgian market

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 6

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

A temporary ban on the import of buckwheat from Russia will not affect the Georgian market, said Economy Minister Natia Turnava, Trend reports via Georgian media.

Russia is practically the main supplier of buckwheat to Georgia.

According to the National Statistics Service, in the first three months of 2021, Georgia purchased buckwheat groats in the amount of $701,700. At the same time, products worth $701,400 were imported from the Russian Federation.

Russia has introduced a ban on the export of buckwheat, buckwheat cereals and buckwheat grains for the period from June 5 to August 31, 2021. The Ministry of Agriculture of the Russia explained this decision by the need to preserve the volume of products on the Russian market and prevent sharp price fluctuations.

“This will not affect our market, we have a free trade regime with 2/3 of the world markets, so this deficit will be very easy to fill if it arises, but today there is no such deficit,” Turnava said.

Earlier, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russia noted that the current volumes of cereal production allow meeting the demand of Russian processing enterprises and meeting the needs of the population for the main types of cereal crops, including buckwheat.
