Total trade turnover between Turkmenistan, Canada for 2020 revealed

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 6

Total trade turnover between Turkmenistan and Canada amounted to $17.8 million in 2020,
Global Affairs Canada told Trend.

The message said that Canadian exports to Turkmenistan amounted to $5.4 million in 2020, while imports - $12.5 million.

"Industrial machinery, equipment and various parts accounted for 70.6 percent of exports to Turkmenistan," noted the message.

Canadian Global Affairs also pointed out that imports were led by basic and industrial chemical, plastic and rubber products which accounted for 98 percent of imports from Turkmenistan.

"Canada and Turkmenistan enjoy a cordial bilateral relationship. The primary focus of the relationship has been on commercial ties (notably in the education sector) and science diplomacy," said the message.

It was added that coronavirus COVID-19 has emphasized the need to increase engagement on science diplomacy between Turkmenistan and Canada.

Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan held a meeting with a representative of Canada.

The sides discussed the prospects for cooperation in trade and economy, education, nature protection, as well as preventive and water diplomacy. The sides exchanged views on relevant issues of partnership within the framework of international organizations.

The parties made proposals to join efforts in the fight against such international challenges as terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking. The priority areas of cooperation between the two countries are energy and transport.
